i’m trying to set up NSFE. When I do a search, it finds the router, not the PC’s attached. How do I get to the individual PC’s? I use GoodSync to sync files across the machines so i know the files are shareable. Thanks
@Andrew,
That’s a bad starting, hosts should be found.
Have you tried adding your hosts by yourself?
Are you sure your shares are working from other pc’s?
Thanks for your quick reply! When i enter the ip address in the hostname field (e.g. 192.168.1.nnn) and try and connect, i get “unknown user name or bad password message”. I tried leaving user and password blank and i tried using the computer name and blank password. Same result.
the shares are working from other PC’s. I can see the folders and files in Win Explorer.
I’m having the same issue as Andrew: :When i enter the ip address in the hostname field (e.g. 192.168.1.nnn) and try and connect, i get “unknown user name or bad password message”. I tried leaving user and password blank and i tried using the computer name and blank password. Same result.

I don`t have a password on the share…so I`m not sure if what Andrew did will work for me…any ideas…
I got it…had to set up an account and password on my Windows 7 PC…then give it Full Control in the shared folder security settings. For some reason I could not connect without the user account set up….even though my Windows share settings had password protected sharing turned off.
Not sure if this was part of the issue, but I also uninstalled Windows Live Essentials. Saw on web searches that it can cause issues with sharing. I`m going to try re-installing later.
@CanMan,
Glad to hear that. Anyway it is very strange.
I have at home three boxes, one win7 without pass, only username and admin rights, one Linux box with user and pass and one win8 (win 7 until last month) with user/pass with admin rights too.
I have never had any problem.
For others that might have issues, this could be a good approach, giving admin rihts to user.
Please, tell us about your experience with live essentials, could also be origin for some issues.
I sent you some screen shots last week to the email address listed in the Support link in my PlayBook. I got no response.
The app in playbook discovers the NAS after a long time, but still I cannot connect using the credentials. I can connect from my laptop to the NAS without any issue using the same credentials.
Any other ideas?
I am unable to access my NAS which uses CIFS protocol. I just get “Unknown username or bad password”. I’ve tried by IP, Hostname, with username/password, without. No connection attempts are showing in the log, however I can access the web interface from the browser. Any suggestions?
Hi, regarding your suggestions to give my user “admin” rights, I am not able to do this. The way the NAS works is as follows:
The OS that runs the NAS is linux, which runs a SMB server which is controlled via the NAS web interface. The web interface allows me to create, delete users and give the users privileges to some of the folders located on the hard disk on the NAS.
I do have root level access to the NAS, but do not know how to manage the users using the SMB tools through the Linux interface.
Nor should you need to give the user “admin” rights, the app should be respective of the share level permissions. I believe we are encountering similar issues.
OK, so I did a little investigating (I really want this to work, you know…).
I am still NOT able to log in using the Playbook Netshares application from my Playbook to my NAS (Encore NAS, but can say that I can telnet to my NAS, login using the same UID I am using for SMB access (I found it exists in Linux) and can browse , create and delete folders in the same shared folders I can view through Windows.
Looked up granting admin rights to my user and the answer I get is granting my user root access. I am not able to do this with the Linux version that comes with my NAS. Is there a way to grant 777 privileges to a particular directory for a user ? C I need to do this to test what is being recommended.
Thanks Tyson for responding, but want to try this anyway to eliminate from this troubleshooting process.
Thanks,
Javier
1. Created a new folder with open access (no authentication in SMB) and tried to connect . Did not work
2. Executed chmod -R 777 /mnt/foldername did not work either
I can connect to my notebook pc on the network with no issues, but the NAS just does not budge and still get the “Unknown user name or bad password ” command.
🙁
Is there something in the smb.conf file in the NAS I could look for that may be the issue? As I said before, I can connect to my NAS from my notebook (same notebook to which I can connect using netshares from my Playbook).

it’s working! Not sure why the search doesn’t find the other PC’s but i entered the ip address, share name and password it works beautifully! Thanks
@Andrew!
Cool! It’s not easy to debug this kind of things so it’s great that you have solved it by yourself 🙂

@Javier,
My last comment was for you!
Try giving admin rights to your user and see what happens.
Read also the comment from CanMan, might help you too…

@Tyson,
Is your NAS found using the search button?
Can you access your shares from your pc or laptop, not using web interface but connecting to the shares?
The NAS is not found using the search button. Yes, I can browse from all PC’s on the network using //NAS01 or //.

@Javier,
Does
chmod -R 777 /directorynamehere
not work?
OK. So, tried the following:
1. Created a new folder with open access (no authentication in SMB) and tried to connect . Did not work
2. Executed chmod -R 777 /mnt/foldername did not work either
