    You executed the command after telneting into the NAS as root right? the permissions are applied to the folder, not the user. 777 gives everyone read/write/execute. What’s the error you get when running the command? Can you do an

    ls -lart

    I’m not very familiar with your particular NAS, so I’m not sure what the config file contains.

  2. Javier says:

    Executing the command ls -lart shows me 2 rows of drwxrwxrwx which I assume is 777 inside that folder I created.
    FYI The Encore NAS comes with a flavor of linux called BusyBox 1.00

  3. Tyson says:

    Ya, the d means it’s a directory the groups of rwx (standing for read, write and execute) refer to owners, groups and users in that order. You convert to a numeric value by adding the values for each group (x = 1, w =2, and r = 4). Looks like they are set to 777.

    Hi,
    I think this app for the playbook is great. I’ve been using it for months now… What I’d like to know is if I can connect to my computer remotely over the Internet (not from within my home network). I’m successful at connecting to the laptop using the ip address assigned to it from within my subnet, but no luck trying to define a port forward for the laptop ip in my local network and trying to connect to my wan ip with the port eg: 99.200.300.22:5000. I set the port forward port number as 5000 and associated it with my laptops local dhcp ip address assigned by my router. I have tried using different port numbers like 3389, which is typically used for remote desktop. Perhaps this app doesn’t have this capability? Am I missing something here? Thanks in advance for your assistance.

      @Rob,

      I should said first that doing that is a very bad option in security terms, this kind of service should never be exposed publically. Do it at your own risk 😛
      Where have you mapping port 5000 to in your local server?

    App installed and can’t Start it. I get a blank Black screen. Is this a blackberry native app? Reinstallation didn’t help.

    • Editor says:

      @Tobias,
      It’s an Android ported app.
      Is your android virtual machine working fine on Playbook? Can you start other Android apps on your Playbook?
      Usually a playbook restart fix this issue.

    I am having problems with my net shares. I type in my IP that I got from cmd prompt “ipconfig” which is my LAN IP. I then created a user for my PC with password. Restarted PC then tried to connect the net shares but still it cant. It said bad user or pass etc.

    I tried doing it with no user and pass but with same results.

    When I use “search” on net shares it keep on getting the wrong IP which is 192.168.1.131 but my real LAN IP from ipconfig is 192.168.1.138.

    Btw, what does the port that this use on the PC? Maybe I have to unblock it from firewall exceptions.

    • Editor says:

      @Jhon,

      Network issues are usually hard to debug. So let’s see step by step.
      First, I will try to get access to your computer from another one, this way we will be sure your server is working fine. If you can’t we should fix this first.
      I will start disabling firewall on your PC so we are sure nothing is blocking.
      Once everything is working from another computer it will probably work from app, but it will be easier to debug between two pc’s than from app.

      Please, let me know about any advance!

    I really like this app. It is much easier to use than Ghost Commander, and also more stable. When copying and pasting a folder of photos, Ghost Commander will sometimes leave one or two of the files unpasted, but I have not had that problem with Net Shares File Explorer. The progress bar is particularly helpful, during a procedure that can sometimes take several minutes.

    I do have a question. When the app opens, the local folder on display is /sdcard. On the PB, this is a bit of an odd directory, in that the PB has no card reader. /sdcard seems to be there mainly for the sake of apps ported from Android, where it would be the normal location for the user’s media.

    On the PB, user’s media would generally be kept in /accounts/1000/shared . In your own Playepub app, that directory is the top-level “home” folder. I also note that, when I do a mount.cifs //$PLAYBOOK_IP/media to another computer, the “media” directory that gets mounted is in fact /accounts/1000/shared .

    Is there any way for a user to configure Net Shares so that it opens up with /accounts/1000/shared in the right-hand column, instead of /sdcard ? I know it’s not difficult to navigate to any desired directory, but my “use case” would be helped a lot by that. My wife is taking her 92-year-old father on a cruise later this year. He takes a lot of photos. It would be nice if, at the end of each day, she could display his photos of the day on the PB’s 7” screen, or even on a TV via HDMI.

    I have to give her step-by-step instructions how to transfer the pictures from his camera card to the PB, via a Nokia N800 and a USB thumb drive. Any reduction in the number of steps would be welcome.

    Sorry that this post is quite long. I might ask another question later, related to the “use case” described above.

  8. Editor says:

    @David McIntosh,

    Current location (/sdcard) is the best way to get access to main folders under Android runtime, they are all mapped to shared ones. During my first tests I found issues with permissions when files where copied to /accounts/1000/shared.

    On /sdcard you have the same folders than under shared folders and everything works fine. Your “downloads”, “music”, “movies”, “DCIM/Camera” folders are the same as shared “downloads”, “music”, “videos”, “camera”.

    Don’t have to go to /accounts… just use “sdcard” folders.

    Have you tried?

  9. David McIntosh says:

    @Editor,

    Many thanks for your reply, and it works for folders of photo files, so that’s OK for this use case.

    [I note that it only works for folders of specific file types. For example, I have a “books” subfolder of /accounts/1000/shared, where I organise books for PlayEpub into further subfolders. Those folders are not mapped to /sdcard (wrong file types). Transfer of books via /sdcard therefore involves first pasting into /sdcard/downloads and later cutting and pasting into the correct location. No big deal, as I mentioned before, since NSFE allows an easy change of local folder.]

    The next question is a bigger deal, relating to the same use case and involving keyboard shortcuts on a bluetooth keyboard. Here is a scenario. SD card from Dad’s camera contains 1300 images, including 70 taken today. We want to view the last 70, switching quickly back and forth between images. It would be foolish (and time-consuming) to copy and paste the whole folder of 1300. It would be tedious to transfer the 70 images one at a time.

    Many file browsers allow a quick way, using keyboard shortcuts such as Shift + End. Simply move focus to IMG-01231, press Shift + End , Ctrl + C, move focus to a previously created empty folder, Ctrl + V, and wait while the files are transferred. (“End” also facilitates moving focus to IMG-01231 in the first place, since then we just have to move 69 places up instead of 1230 places down.)

    We can do this with File Manager on the N800 and a bluetooth keyboard, quickly transferring the last 70 images to a previously empty folder on a USB thumb drive. Then we can use NSFE to transfer the folder and its 70 images to the PB.

    It would be nice to do it all with NSFE, but NSFE does not respond to the keyboard’s “End” or “Shift + End”. Is it a major change to add this capability to NSFE?

  10. Editor says:

    @David McIntosh,

    Yes, you are right, not all the shared folders are mapped under Android sdcard, you’ll have to move to /accounts to go into books folder, there is no choice.

    Regarding your next suggestion, I understand what you mean. You’d like a multiple select feature, instead of having to copy files or folders individually. I agree, this would be a very good advantage. I’ll take it into account for future releases, but it will not be available soon, it means a very big change as the whole UI has to be changed from a long-tap-select to a different way.

    Next big feature you will see (perhaps this week) is the possibility to play videos/audio files without copying them to the device, just streaming! I’m just testing right now.

  11. David McIntosh says:

    @Editor,

    [Written before you posted the reply above]

    I see what you mean about the “issues with permissions”. I am no longer able to create new top-level subfolders of /accounts/1000/shared. I created several about a year ago, such as /accounts/1000/shared/books. BB must have blocked that possibility in one of the OS updates since then.

    There is no problem creating new subfolders at a lower level (such as subfolders of /accounts/1000/shared/books). That is what I do with media copied through NSFE. However, I can see that other users could encounter big problems if they don’t already have the top-level subfolders in place; so I take back my suggestion of having the app open at that location.

    Still interested in the keyboard shortcuts.

    P.S. Just noticed your reply. Many thanks for your attention. I don’t mean to create a big upheaval. I have written step-by-step instructions for my wife to select the photos on the N800, and she seems to be OK with that.

  12. Editor says:

    Hey guys!
    Just to let you know you will find a new update with network media player, I mean, stream your videos/music from your network shares 🙂

  13. PBUser says:

    I keep getting Unknown username or bad password errors when trying to connect to a share. Anonymous access works in Ghost Commander. Any ideas?

  14. PBUser says:

    Ahhh, putting ‘guest’ as the username fixed it.

  15. David McIntosh says:

    Thank you very much for changing the app as requested at 01:00, 06.05.2013. Now when NSFE opens, the Local Folder is set to /accounts/1000/shared. I assume that this change happened in one of the two recent upgrades, and I hope it will be OK for other users as well. Thanks again.
